I wrote Pen Pal to ask out the girl I liked

It worked

We were long distance

A whole 7 hour drive away from each other

We met for the first time at gay prom

When I visited her at her place

I taught her how to play this song on guitar

She told me she remembered even years after

She also introduced me to tarot cards that day

I now own eight (8) different decks

Sophia Edwards passed away on July 1st, 2021

Her ashes were spread around a tree by her home

My EP Met You Like Mercury is dedicated to her

She was such a beautiful soul

Incredibly emotionally mature for her age

She was only 19 when she passed

I wrote Garden Fairy to cope with her passing

She was the one who told me that love is a garden

So I wanted to write a song to commemorate that

I was inspired by Cavetown which was an artist she introduced me to

We played a lot of Stardew Valley

During and after we dated

So the first verse was a nod to our farm

After the funeral

I took home one of her old spell jars

Filled with her "soil, ashes, and leaves"

So my lyrics were literal

I'm very lucky that I was able to use my grief to create something special

And even luckier to have known her

Now when I listen to Pen Pal I feel a strong sense of nostalgia

I get a physical reaction from the guitar part alone

Theoretically it's just 3 different types of C chords

But it'll always make me feel something
